How to Get Rid of Furniture Before a Move in Los Angeles

The fastest free option in Los Angeles is the city's bulky item pickup. If you live in a City of LA home on city trash collection, LA Sanitation will take furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpet, and large wood pieces from your curb at no charge, with no limit on how often you use it. You schedule it through the MyLA311 app, the online request form, or by calling 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day before your regular trash day. That is the whole process. If the furniture is still in good shape, donating is usually better than trashing it. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles runs a ReStore pickup service with a $50 fee for ground-level items, typically collected within a few days. Selling through OfferUp or Facebook Marketplace works for anything desirable.

Why This Saves Real Money

Los Angeles movers charge around $94 per hour per mover. A two-person crew runs $71 to $236 per hour depending on the company and the job. A typical LA move comes in around $2,052, with most falling between $1,307 and $2,850.

That pricing is by the hour for local moves, which means volume is time and time is money.

Home size Typical local move cost
1 bedroom $295 to $827
2 bedrooms $591 to $1,417
3 bedrooms $1,063 to $2,362

Look at the jump between one and two bedrooms. Cutting a sofa, a dresser, and a bed frame out of a move can genuinely move you down a tier. Our breakdown of LA moving costs covers what else drives the number.

Option 1: Free City Pickup

This is the one most Angelenos do not know exists, and it is the best deal in the city.

What LA Sanitation Takes

  • Furniture of any kind
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Toilets and sinks
  • Rolled carpet
  • Large wood pieces and doors
  • Electronic waste

What They Will Not Take

  • Automotive parts
  • Construction and remodeling debris
  • Commercial appliances
  • Paint, solvents, and chemicals
  • Medicines and needles
  • Fluorescent lights

Cardboard is handled separately through a Move In and Move Out service rather than bulky item pickup, so do not pile your flattened boxes next to the couch and hope.

How to Schedule

  1. Have an itemized list ready, such as one mattress, two chairs, and a desk
  2. Request through the bulky item pickup service, the MyLA311 app, or 1-800-773-2489
  3. Book at least one business day before your regular trash collection day
  4. Place items at the curb the night before

There are also free drop-off events on Saturdays at five locations across the city, running 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., if you have a truck and do not want to wait.

Tip: This service is for City of Los Angeles residents on city collection. If you are in Alhambra, Pasadena, Burbank, or an unincorporated county area, your city or hauler runs its own program with different rules and sometimes a fee. Check before you assume.

Option 2: Donation With Pickup

Better outcome, slightly more effort.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles will schedule a ReStore pickup for a $50 service fee, usually within a few days. Items need to be at ground level, meaning garage, driveway, or curbside. They also offer an enhanced pickup that takes items from inside the home, which costs more but solves the third-floor-walkup problem.

Goodwill Southern California and the Salvation Army both run pickup programs in the LA area, and Out of the Closet takes household goods at its locations. Availability varies by neighborhood and time of year, so call rather than assume.

What Donation Centers Usually Decline

  • Anything with rips, stains, or water damage
  • Mattresses, in most cases
  • Particleboard furniture that will not survive a second move
  • Items with missing hardware
  • Anything that smells of smoke or pets

Be honest with yourself here. Donation centers throw away a large share of what they receive, and dropping off a broken dresser just moves your disposal problem onto a charity.

Tip: Get a receipt. Donated household goods are deductible at fair market value if you itemize, and a written receipt from the organization is what makes that stick.

Option 3: Selling

Worth it for solid wood, mid-century, name-brand, and anything under three years old. Not worth it for a sagging sectional.

  • Facebook Marketplace moves the most volume in LA and is free
  • OfferUp works well for furniture specifically
  • Craigslist still moves large items, especially free listings
  • Consignment makes sense only for genuinely high-value pieces, and it is slow

Price to move, not to recoup. Something listed at $200 that sits for three weeks is worth less than something listed at $80 that leaves on Saturday, because the alternative is paying to transport it.

Put “curbside pickup, you haul” in the listing. Half the friction in selling furniture is coordinating access.

Tip: Stop selling two weeks out and switch to donation or city pickup. People chasing an extra $60 on a bookshelf end up paying movers to carry it, which costs more than the bookshelf was worth.

Option 4: Junk Removal or Mover Hauling

Sometimes you have a pile of broken, stained, oversized things and no time. That is what paid removal is for.

Junk removal services in LA generally price by truck volume, and a partial load costs a few hundred dollars. We also handle hauling and removal directly, which for most customers is simpler, because it happens on the same visit as the move rather than as a separate appointment on a separate day.

This is the right call when the deadline is tight or when the items are genuinely unsellable. It is the wrong call when you had four weeks and used none of them.

A Timeline That Works

Four Weeks Out

Walk every room and mark what is not coming. Measure your new space first, since half of what people agonize over will not fit anyway. Our guide to downsizing for a move covers how to make those calls.

Three Weeks Out

List anything worth selling. Book donation pickups now, because slots fill and lead times run several days.

Two Weeks Out

Stop selling. Schedule your bulky item pickup for a date before the move, not the day of.

One Week Out

Final pass. Anything still undecided goes in the donate or dispose pile. Confirm your mover’s inventory reflects what is actually coming, since an estimate based on a full apartment will be wrong if you removed a third of it. This is also why booking movers early helps, because the survey happens before the purge rather than after.

What About Things You Are Unsure About?

Some items are worth keeping even when the move cost looks high. Antiques, anything custom, and pieces that genuinely fit the new place all survive the cut.

Storage is the middle path when you cannot decide, though it should be a real decision rather than a delay tactic. A $150 monthly unit holding a $200 couch stops making sense in month two. Our overview of storage during a move covers when it earns its keep.

The honest rule: if you would not pay to move it, you would not pay to store it either.

FAQ

Three to four weeks before the move. Donation pickups have lead times, selling takes longer than people expect, and city pickup has to be scheduled around your trash day.

It depends on volume, but local LA moves are priced hourly at roughly $94 per mover per hour. Removing several large pieces can shorten a job by an hour or more and sometimes drops you a full home-size tier.

Only with a scheduled pickup. Mattresses are accepted through the bulky item program, but leaving one out without a request can result in a citation.

Several will. Habitat for Humanity of Greater LA charges a $50 service fee for ground-level pickup, and Goodwill and the Salvation Army run pickup programs depending on your neighborhood.

Use the MyLA311 app, the online service request form, or call 1-800-773-2489. Book at least one business day before your regular trash collection day and have an itemized list ready.
