How Far in Advance Should You Book Movers in Los Angeles?

Most Los Angeles households should book movers four to six weeks ahead for a local move, and eight to twelve weeks for a long-distance one. Summer dates fill fastest, and a Saturday at the end of June can be gone two months out. The instinct is to wait until the lease is signed, the keys are confirmed, and everything feels settled. The problem is that by the time everything feels settled, the good dates are taken and you are choosing from whatever is left.

Booking Lead Times by Move Type

Move Type Off-Peak (Oct–Apr) Peak Season (May–Sep)
Studio or 1-bedroom, local 2 to 3 weeks 4 to 6 weeks
2 to 3 bedroom, local 3 to 4 weeks 6 to 8 weeks
4+ bedroom, local 4 to 6 weeks 8 weeks
Long distance or interstate 6 to 8 weeks 8 to 12 weeks
Office or commercial 6 to 8 weeks 8 to 12 weeks
Adding full packing service Add 1 to 2 weeks Add 2 weeks

These ranges line up with broader industry guidance. moveBuddha’s analysis of booking lead times recommends two to four weeks for off-peak local moves and four to eight weeks during peak periods, with interstate moves stretching to twelve weeks in summer.

Los Angeles sits at the demanding end of that range because the market is large, dense, and busy year round.

Why LA Fills Up Faster Than Most Cities

A few things stack here that do not stack everywhere else.

Lease cycles.

Most LA apartment leases start on the first, which packs the last week of every month into a single bottleneck. Twelve times a year, not once.

University calendars.

UCLA, USC, and the Cal State campuses turn over thousands of households in the same few weeks each spring and again each fall.

Building restrictions.

Many LA apartment buildings and condos limit moves to weekday business hours. That compresses demand into fewer available slots than the calendar suggests.

Permits.

On permit-parking blocks, a temporary no-parking permit needs ten to fourteen business days of lead time on its own. If you book the crew two weeks out, you may already be too late for the curb space. Our guide to LA moving truck permits covers that timeline.

Traffic.

Crews can fit fewer jobs into a day here than in a smaller metro, which means less slack in the schedule overall.

What Booking Early Actually Buys You

Your preferred date. The obvious one, but it matters most if a lease or escrow gives you a narrow window.

A cheaper date. With lead time you can choose a midweek, mid-month slot rather than taking whatever is open. Our breakdown of the cheapest day to hire movers covers where those savings come from.

Time to compare quotes. Three written estimates tell you the fair range. People who call a week out take the first available number.

Time to vet the company. California intrastate movers need a CAL-T number from the CPUC, and interstate carriers need a USDOT number you can verify through the FMCSA SAFER database. Checking those takes minutes, but only if you have minutes. Our guide to choosing a moving company in LA walks through the verification.

Room to arrange the building. Freight elevators, loading docks, and certificates of insurance all take longer than people expect.

A Realistic Timeline

  • Eight weeks out. Research companies and start collecting estimates. For a summer or interstate move, book now.
  • Six weeks out. Book the crew for a standard local move. Confirm the date in writing.
  • Four weeks out. Start decluttering. Ask your building about elevator reservations, move windows, and insurance requirements.
  • Three weeks out. Apply for a parking permit if your block needs one. Order packing supplies if you are packing yourself.
  • Two weeks out. Transfer utilities. Confirm crew size and arrival window with your mover.
  • One week out. Post no-parking signs if you have a permit, which must go up 72 hours ahead. Pack a first-night box.
  • Move day. Walk through with the crew before loading and again before they leave.

Tip: Book the crew before you finalize the packing plan, not after. Dates are the scarce resource. Boxes are not.

When You Need Even More Lead Time

Add two to four weeks to any of the above if:

  • You need full packing service as well as the move
  • You need storage between closing or lease dates
  • You are moving a piano, safe, or oversized artwork
  • Your building requires a certificate of insurance
  • You are relocating an office and need it done over a weekend
  • Your move date falls in the last week of the month during summer

Commercial moves in particular need six to eight weeks minimum, and more if the whole thing has to happen outside business hours. Our guide to office moving in Los Angeles covers the sequencing.

Booking a Last-Minute Move

Sometimes the timeline is not yours. A job starts sooner than expected, an escrow moves, a lease falls through.

You can still get a good crew if you stay flexible:

  • Ask about midweek and mid-month dates first
  • Be flexible on the arrival window rather than requesting a specific hour
  • Consider labor-only help if you can handle the truck yourself
  • Call smaller local companies as well as large ones
  • Do not skip the license verification, even under time pressure

That last point matters most. Rushed customers are exactly who bad operators look for. A company that cannot produce a CAL-T or USDOT number on the first call is not the answer to your scheduling problem.

We keep some capacity open for short-notice work, and our last-minute moving page covers how that works.
